There is no historical center as such in Pilar de la Horadada, because initially the municipality was formed as a consolidation of separate small settlements. The municipality was named for the Holy Virgin Pilar, the patroness of the town. And one of the coastal areas was named for the ancient watchtower (1591 year of construction) – Torre del Pilar, which protected the town from pirate raids in the Middle Ages and was part of the network of watchtowers of the King Philip II.

However, it is worth noting that this costal area of Alicante has been inhabited since ancient times: during the Roman Empire, Pilar de la Horadada (called Thiar in those early years) served as a transshipment point of the August Road – the longest way connecting ancient Cadiz and Girona, as well as all other major cities of the coast. Remains of an ancient Roman settlement that date back to the II century BC have been found in the El Mojon area.

As for centuries, today the economic mainstay of the municipality is agriculture. It is followed by a strongly growing tourism and construction sector. The demand for housing in modern urbanizations near the sea and the beach is continually increasing. The main buyers are the Spaniards themselves, as well as Europeans who are going to move to a quiet and peaceful place in retirement. According to the data of the municipality, about 45% of the registered residents are foreigners.
