Benitachell (full name El Poble Nou de Benitatxell, which translates literally as “the new village of Benitachell”, from the Valencian El Poble Nou de Benitatxell) is a small town in the north of the Costa Blanca, known above all for its upmarket developments.<\/p>\n

Not especially remarkable for its history or architecture, Benitachell has nevertheless become one of the centres of luxury property on the Spanish coast. More than half of the town’s residents are foreigners, and this is no surprise: foreign investors were the first to appreciate the unique location, superb scenery and climate of the area. Today villas and modern developments are being actively built here in response to ever-growing demand from investors.<\/p>\n

Benitachell is conveniently located between two international airports: Alicante-Elche (90 km) and Valencia (130 km). The nearest large resort towns are just minutes away by car: J\u00e1vea (8 km), Calpe<\/a> (16 km), Altea<\/a> (28 km) and D\u00e9nia<\/a> (19 km); it takes a little longer to reach Benidorm<\/a> (40 km), the entertainment and shopping centre of the Costa Blanca.<\/p>\n

The northern Costa Blanca has been inhabited since ancient times and was at the centre of events: Iberian settlements were conquered by the Romans, Roman lands were invaded by the Muslims, the Muslims were driven out by the Christians during the Reconquista, and through all of this the town was destroyed and rebuilt more than once. The last major rebuilding took place at the end of the 17th century, and that is when the town began to be called “New Benitachell”.<\/p>\n

Benitachell’s hallmark is its beautiful pastoral landscapes and picturesque countryside. As along the whole coast, the municipality’s main economic activities are tourism and farming. Vineyards and groves of orange and almond trees are a favourite spot for photographers and tourists.<\/p>\n

The town itself is a typical Spanish village with narrow stone streets winding up the hillside. At its centre stands the 18th-century stone church of Saint Mary Magdalene (La Iglesia de Santa Mar\u00eda Magdalena) with a beautiful interior. Another architectural sight is the 19th-century chapel of Saint James the Apostle (Oratorio de San Jaime Ap\u00f3stol). A boat trip is also well worth it: from a boat sailing close to the shore you can see the old ladders and ropes that still hang from the sheer cliffs, which fishermen once used to climb down to the sea.<\/p>\n

And of course, when talking about the northern Costa Blanca, the Marina Alta area to which Benitachell belongs, one cannot fail to mention the famous “riuraus”: old stone buildings with arches that were used for drying raisins.<\/p>\n

Raisin production, with large quantities exported to Europe and the USA, once helped the municipality develop and strengthened its economy.<\/p>\n
