The best areas and neighbourhoods in Málaga to live in

4 October, 2024

There are many reasons why Málaga is considered one of the ideal cities to live in our country, whatever your lifestyle and whatever age you are. This city bathed by the Mediterranean Sea offers the opportunity to enjoy a pleasant climate all year round and offers a great cultural and gastronomic offer.

As in most cities, the most suitable areas of Málaga to live will depend directly on the lifestyle you have. Although we can say that most of the best areas to live in the city are located between the beach and the center.

Best and neighborhoods in Málaga to live

If you are looking for a new home in the city, below we explain which are the best areas and neighborhoods to live:

Soho

Until a little over a decade ago it was in total decline, but today it has become one of the fashionable places in the city thanks to the artistic spirit that is breathed in its streets and one of the best neighborhoods to live in Málaga capital. The neighborhood is located between the port and the main Alameda, and just a 15-minute walk from the center.

We could say that Soho is the most artistic neighborhood, since many of the buildings and their facades are decorated with paintings made by artists who have passed through the neighborhood.

El Palo y Pedregalejo

El Palo and Pedregalejo are two areas of Málaga where it is easy to consider living. Its streets are very quiet and the atmosphere is much more relaxed than in the rest of the city. Families with children and students should know that some of the best-known language schools in the city are located in this area.

As they are traditionally fishing neighborhoods, many of the fishermen’s houses near the beach are preserved, as well as what were the summer residences of the Málaga bourgeoisie in the 19th century. But it is also possible to find new buildings in which young people and families settle.

The Pedregalejo neighborhood is undoubtedly one of the best areas to live in Málaga. The only problem is the price of their houses and rents. Almost all the houses in the area have a garden and many even have a swimming pool, so they have a higher price than an average apartment in Málaga. In fact, a chalet or house in Pedregalejo usually costs around 1,000-1,300 euros per month to rent.

In these two areas you can enjoy a quiet life by the sea and at the same time have all the services you may need on a daily basis.

Of course, if you have this budget, look no further, in Pedregalejo you will have an enviable quality of life.

El Palo is also a very good area and similar to Pedregalejo, but most of its homes are apartments instead of chalets, so their prices are similar to the average of the rest of the city.

Historic center

The historic center of Málaga is not just the old town, it is an almost labyrinth of streets through which you will get lost and discover new streets.

It is an area with remains of Arab walls, a beautiful cathedral and its imposing Alcazaba. Its elegant Larios street and its 19th century buildings make it one of the areas to live.

However, if you are looking for tranquility, the historic center is not for you. Many residents of the center complain about how difficult it is to fall asleep due to the noise of the clubs, people going out to have fun, and the garbage trucks that pass by in the wee hours of the morning.

So we could say that living in the center of Málaga is the best option for young people and people looking to live an urban life.  Living in the historic center has the advantage of being close to everywhere, while the disadvantage is noise, especially on weekends.

Prices vary depending on the area, but are usually around 500-600 euros for a one or two-bedroom apartment.

The best areas of the historic center are Alameda de Colón, Plaza de la Merced, Plaza de los Monos or Carretería since they are within the historic center a little further away from the hustle and bustle of nightlife.

Teatinos

This neighborhood is located within the university area, it is one of the most modern parts of the city.

It has many modern buildings and its majority population is students or young families. It is a neighborhood with a lot of atmosphere, locals and the price is quite competitive. This neighborhood is one of those that has grown the most in recent years and, in addition, it is directly connected to the Virgen de la Victoria University Hospital and the Andalusia Technology Park.

The only drawback is that it is a little further away than the rest of the beach neighborhoods and the historic center.

La Malagueta

La Malagueta is probably the best area to live in Málaga capital, as it has the most privileged location. Not only is it very close to the historic center of the city, but it is located next to the beach. In addition, it offers a great quality of life and a quiet daily life with all the services within reach, but without the overcrowding of the population that can be felt in the center.

It is surely the best neighborhood to live in Málaga because you have everything nearby, the only problem it has is the prices. Together with El Limonar they are the most expensive areas of the city, an apartment here can even cost twice as much as in other areas of the city.

El Limonar

El Limonar is one of the neighborhoods of East Málaga, it is located between La Malagueta and Pedregalejo. It is located near Mount Gibralfaro and the beach. It is one of the areas where the majority of the population that lives is upper-middle class and upper class.

That is why the prices per square meter are one of the most expensive in the city, both for renting and purchasing apartments.

Furthermore, in this neighborhood there is a large amount of new construction housing, mostly single-family homes with a garden, pool and sea views. The area is one of the quietest in Málaga, a comfortable distance from the center and the beach, as well as being very well connected by public transport.

Huelin / La Misericordia

These neighborhoods are adjacent to each other in the west of the city and both are on the beach. They are very popular working-class neighborhoods where it is difficult to get a house as it is in high demand. This area has many places, parks and has a very pleasant atmosphere.

It is a good option for families and young people, as it is an area with cafes, young people and many schools.
