The Vega Baja district became the main driving force behind the growth of housing construction in Alicante province at the beginning of 2026. In the first quarter, construction began on 1,972 residential units here – an outstanding figure that represents growth of 115% compared with the same period in 2025 and 84% compared with the previous quarter, according to data from the Official Association of Technical Architecture of Alicante (COATA).
Such significant growth in Vega Baja allowed the province to reach record levels: from January to March, construction began on 3,418 units, which is 25.3% more than a year earlier and the second-best quarterly figure since 2008.
Torrevieja leads in the number of new projects
Within the district, the leading role is played by Torrevieja, where construction began on 1,281 housing units in just three months. This even exceeds the total figure for all of 2025, when the municipality ended the year with 1,148 housing projects started and became one of the municipalities with the highest construction activity in the province. Along with Torrevieja, San Miguel de Salinas (320) and Guardamar del Segura (145) also stand out.
Vega Baja supports construction growth in the province
Construction growth in the province is mainly supported by activity in Vega Baja (4,981 units over the last twelve months – 27% more than at the end of 2025), while other districts are beginning to show signs of slowing down. Thus, in the Elche district, construction began on only 120 units during the quarter (54.4% less than in the previous quarter), while in the inland areas of the province the decline exceeded 30%.
Despite the record figures, COATA warns that some signs of oversupply are beginning to appear in the market. The organization notes a slowdown in activity in the last weeks of March and the first weeks of April amid international uncertainty.
