According to a study by the international consultancy Cushman&Wakefield, which provides services in every commercial property sector, Madrid and Barcelona are among the top five European cities with the highest volume of hotel investment. In the ranking compiled by Cushman&Wakefield experts, Madrid took second place and the Catalan capital fifth. Compared with 2021, investment in this commercial property sector rose by 5% in Madrid, while in Barcelona it fell by 2%.
The ranking, based on a survey of representatives of large investment funds, was led by Paris. Besides Paris and the two Spanish cities, the top ten also included London, Amsterdam, Berlin, Milan, Rome, Edinburgh and Lisbon. Looking at countries as a whole, the largest number of major towns and cities with hotel investment are in the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Spain, Portugal and Italy. More than a third of potential investors show strong interest in the Iberian Peninsula, and only 9% do not see it as a profitable place to invest.
As for hotel types, 72% of respondents believe that, compared with 2019, holiday apartments and resort and spa complexes now look the most attractive. They are much less interested in buying airport hotels and hotels focused on meetings, conventions and exhibitions.
