According to a study carried out by the Association of Real Estate Agents of Catalonia (API) together with the local office of Deloitte, Spain has become the second country in the world for investment in PropTech (from the English term “property technology”), meaning digital projects in the property market. Over 2020 and 2021 a total of €824 million went into this area, and on this measure Spain is second only to the USA (almost €5.9 billion). Third place in the ranking goes to the United Kingdom (€769 million), followed by India (742) and Brazil (444).
The list of countries with the largest number of “proptech” projects is led by the United Kingdom, home to 709 such companies; Germany is second (609) and Spain third (536). What sets these companies apart is their use of modern digital technology to streamline the buying, renting, planning and construction of property, as well as its upkeep, for example improving the energy efficiency of buildings or developing mobile apps for asset management.
According to experts at Deloitte and API, the “proptech” sector will keep growing steadily at least until the end of 2022 as the “digitalisation” of the economy continues. And unlike in many other countries, investment in these projects is not limited to offices: it covers every type of property without exception.
