Several of Spain’s leading financial institutions – CaixaBank, BBVA, Sabadell, Unicaja, Abanca and Bankinter – have added Bizum Pay to their payment services. This expands customers’ ability to make purchases in physical stores directly from their smartphones without needing physical cards.
CaixaBank and Bankinter Open Access to Bizum Pay
CaixaBank, in particular, has extended access to Bizum Pay to 100% of its customers, who can download the application and activate in-store payments using the service. The bank has stated that it has almost completed the rollout of Bizum Pay across its merchant network and already has more than 517,000 payment terminals with the service enabled.
Since the pilot phase began in mid-July 2026, CaixaBank customers have made approximately 25,000 payments totalling €400,000. According to the bank’s representatives, this demonstrates users’ interest in new digital payment methods. The introduction of the service forms part of the bank’s strategy to innovate in payment solutions and develop products that reflect changing consumer habits and the digitalisation of relationships between customers and merchants.
Bankinter has also made the Bizum Pay feature fully available to its customers. To use the new service, customers must open the Bankinter app, go to Bizum (which must already be activated), select “Bizum Pay” and download the application. Other Bizum Pay features include viewing recent transactions, storing transport tickets or digital passes, adding different payment methods and selecting the most suitable one.
Bizum Pay Rollout at Unicaja, BBVA, Sabadell and Abanca
Unicaja has also announced the addition of the service to its payment system, describing the move as part of its 2025–2027 Strategic Plan. The new service is intended to simplify everyday payments and expand Bizum’s traditional capabilities, which until now have been primarily associated with money transfers between individuals.
Meanwhile, BBVA has completed the rollout of the service across all its connected physical merchant locations. As a result, more than 368,000 outlets can now accept in-person payments through Bizum using payment terminals. Coverage is expected to expand to major retail chains in the coming months as they complete the necessary adaptations. At the same time, BBVA has enabled its customers to pay through Bizum directly from their mobile phones, prioritising the integration of this feature into the “BBVA Pay” application.
As for Banco Sabadell, the platform is available to individual customers, more than 78% of whom regularly use Bizum, and is already operational at more than 340,000 merchant locations. This represents almost 100% of the bank’s business customers.
Abanca has also announced the full integration of Bizum Pay into its system. The service is now available both to individual customers and to 100% of merchant locations equipped with the Galician bank’s smart payment terminals.
Bizum Pay Available to 20 Million Users in Spain
Overall, Bizum has already enabled in-store payments for 20 million of its users, representing 60% of everyone using this payment method. In addition, 75% of bank payment terminals already accept Bizum payments, corresponding to more than 1.6 million merchant locations. This figure is supplemented by terminals operated by more than 25 major retail chains across various sectors that accept in-person Bizum payments.
